Fixed appliances are probably the most common type of orthodontic appliances in use today.
Fixed appliances consist of small brackets that are attached onto the front surface of the teeth with a dental adhesive.
They enable the dentist to accurately move the teeth into the desired position.
What is a fixed appliance used for?
Your fixed appliance consists of small metal (or porcelain) attachments called brackets, fixed to your teeth with a special dental adhesive. The attachments are easily removed at the end of treatment, leaving your teeth unharmed.
Functional appliances
They are either removable from the mouth or fixed to the teeth, and work by stimulating the muscles of mastication and soft tissues of the face. This produces a distalising force on the upper dentition and an anterior force on the lower.
What is a fixed retainer?
The fixed retainer is a thin wire that is carefully adapted and bonded to the inside surfaces of the front 4 or 6 teeth. Because they are permanent, there is no chance of losing them or forgetting to wear them. The fixed retainer will prevent the front teeth from shifting after orthodontic treatment has been completed.
